At the top of the show we take a historic look into the first radio programs. We then focus on specific content in the fields of music, sports and radiodramas. This show features an interview with Andy Stuhl, PhD student in Communication Studies at McGill, about hit music radio formats. Anja Borck (MOEB director) and Mariana Mej\u00eda Ahrens (Centennial Program Coordinator) lead the discussion in the studio based on research done by Alain Dufour (SQCRA president).<\/span><\/p>\n<div href=\"https:\/\/radio100.moeb.ca\/en\/radio100ckut-4\/\">Fourth broadcast&nbsp; &gt; &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>TOP 40 RADIO: AN INTERVIEW WITH ANDY STUHL<\/h2>\n<div class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Interviews are one of the common features on radio and television. The skill is to create a narrative through questions and answers that showcase an expert&#8217;s knowledge. Questions are an instrument to make a complex subject more approachable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Since the team had selected the theme of radio entertainment for the third show, there was great interest in finding experts whose research, knowledge or experience related to music, sports, radio dramas, or other related topics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Through her network at McGill University, Mariana met PhD student Andy Stuhl. Andy\u2019s background in communication and media studies research, and his interest in the historical development in music programming technology, including radio content programming, made him a great fit for the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The interview planning process started when Andy visited the MOEB, about a month before the scheduled broadcast day for the show that would feature it. After exploring the exhibits at the museum, Mariana and Andy chatted about the Centennial, the residency at CKUT, and the content planned thus far for the third show. Andy shared that he had previously researched the development of top 40 music formats and programming, and that he would like to use the interview for the Centennial show to explore the subject in a Canadian context. After the topic to be featured in the interview was clear, the production process could begin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The steps that followed happened in a concurrent and fast paced way. While Andy worked on collecting information and shaping a historical narrative, Mariana scheduled the use of one of CKUT\u2019s studios to meet and record the interview. She also attended a training session to learn the set up she\u2019d be using to record. After setting a date to meet in the studio, Mariana reviewed Andy\u2019s research in order to prepare questions for the interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once in the studio, after setting up the recording software and the microphone levels, Mariana interviewed Andy for about an hour, while simultaneously recording the conversation. The goal of the recording session was to touch on all the key facts that Andy had researched, allowing him ample time to share his knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The next challenge was editing the interview to a length that fit the segments and duration of the show. Mariana managed to produce a 12 minute piece which fit well in the segment about music and its entertainment value over the radio. Alain added the time length of the interview to the show\u2019s spreadsheet and planned the timing of the rest of the segments around it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the playlist above, you can listen to Andy\u2019s interview about the beginnings of top 40 programming and transcription discs as it was broadcasted on March 16.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>BEHIND THE SCENES: THE BEGINNING OF THE COVID RESPONSE<\/h2>\n<div class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">The third broadcast in our residency occurred on March 16. By this time, some guidelines in response to the Covid 19 crisis were already in place. The Centennial team changed the location of their usual pre-show meeting from a nearby cafe to the CKUT broadcasting studio. Precautions to avoid exposure to the virus had begun circulating among public transit users, which led to Alain\u2019s decision to avoid the metro ride into the city that day. Even the studio was different that day, as washing one\u2019s hands was now mandatory before entering and all the microphones were covered with Lysol wipes. Nonetheless, the show had to go on!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Luckily, during the planning process Alain had produced a detailed timesheet specifying the length of all the content and show segments. This sheet guided Anja and Mariana to create the show that you can listen to in the playlist above. Kicking off with an excerpt from the War of the Worlds, the show featured Alain\u2019s research about the development of radio entertainment content, his recreation of the popular radio-drama \u201cRue Principale\u201d, an interview with Andy Stuhl about radio shaping the top 40 music charts, an excerpt from an NHL Stanley cup final, all sprinkled with a curated selection of songs that relate to the spoken word content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is important to note that in the recreation of \u201cRue Principale,\u201d Alain is the only person reading the script. But what about the female character that can be heard in it? Well, that is Alain using a pitch shifter to accentuate the higher frequencies in his voice as he read the lines that a woman would have been originally cast to perform. He also added sound effects that are pre-recorded and available online. These sound effects would have been performed live in the studio by a noisemaker while the voice actors delivered their lines, which we know from rare footage that deliver the atmosphere of the radio studio during early broadcasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One curious feature in this broadcast comes in the form of technical difficulties while live on the air. This part of the broadcast was definitely not planned. Feeling more confident about being in the studio and operating the equipment, we decided to go without the support of a CKUT technician. But when Mariana tried to playback the first piece of pre-recorded content, no signal was going through the board bringing the show to a silent halt. What to do with silence on the radio?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If radio is the wireless transmission of waves, there is no radio when no waves are transmitted. You need sound for radio, so we rushed to continue with some slightly awkward casual talk, to cure the crisis somewhat, until a CKUT technician rushed into the studio and under the board to find two cables that were disconnected. She quickly reconnected them and, like magic, everything started working as it should! We could play our planned pre-recorded content and the show went on without any more hiccups. Live radio does not know a dull moment, at least not for those who are producing it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Third show of our March residency on CKUT class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Les entrevues sont l&#8217;une des caract\u00e9ristiques communes \u00e0 la radio et \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision. Le but est de cr\u00e9er un r\u00e9cit \u00e0 travers des questions et r\u00e9ponses qui mettent en valeur les connaissances d&#8217;un expert. Les questions servent \u00e0 rendre un sujet complexe plus accessible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00c9tant donn\u00e9 que l&#8217;\u00e9quipe avait choisi le th\u00e8me du divertissement radio pour la troisi\u00e8me \u00e9mission, il y avait un grand int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 trouver des experts dont les recherches, les connaissances ou l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience se rapportaient \u00e0 la musique, aux sports, aux radioromans ou \u00e0 d&#8217;autres sujets connexes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son r\u00e9seau \u00e0 l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 McGill, Mariana a rencontr\u00e9 Andy Stuhl, doctorant. Les ant\u00e9c\u00e9dents d&#8217;Andy en recherche en communication et en \u00e9tudes des m\u00e9dias, et son int\u00e9r\u00eat pour le d\u00e9veloppement historique de la technologie de programmation musicale, y compris la programmation de contenu radio, en ont fait un intervenant id\u00e9al pour l&#8217;\u00e9mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Le processus de planification des entretiens a commenc\u00e9 lorsqu\u2019 Andy a visit\u00e9 le MOEB, environ un mois avant la journ\u00e9e de diffusion pr\u00e9vue pour l&#8217;\u00e9mission qui le pr\u00e9senterait. Apr\u00e8s avoir explor\u00e9 les expositions du mus\u00e9e, Mariana et Andy ont discut\u00e9 du centenaire de la radio \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, de la pr\u00e9sentation \u00e0 CKUT et du contenu pr\u00e9vu jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent pour la troisi\u00e8me \u00e9mission. Andy a mentionn\u00e9 qu&#8217;il avait pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment r\u00e9vis\u00e9 le contenu des 40 principaux programmes musicaux qu&#8217;il aimerait utiliser lors de l&#8217;entrevue pour l&#8217;\u00e9mission du \u00ab Centenaire \u00bb , afin de pr\u00e9senter le sujet dans un contexte canadien. Et donc, maintenant que le sujet \u00e0 aborder lors de l\u2019entrevue \u00e9tait bien d\u00e9fini, le processus de production pouvait commencer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Les \u00e9tapes qui ont suivi se sont d\u00e9roul\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re concurrente et rapide. Alors qu&#8217;Andy travaillait \u00e0 la collecte d&#8217;informations et \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9laboration d&#8217;un r\u00e9cit historique, Mariana a pr\u00e9vu d&#8217;utiliser l&#8217;un des studios de CKUT pour faire et enregistrer l&#8217;entrevue. Elle a \u00e9galement assist\u00e9 \u00e0 une session de formation pour apprendre le fonctionnement de l\u2019\u00e9quipement qu&#8217;elle utiliserait pour enregistrer. Apr\u00e8s avoir fix\u00e9 une date pour la rencontre au studio, Mariana a pass\u00e9 en revue les recherches d&#8217;Andy afin de pr\u00e9parer ses questions pour l&#8217;entretien.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Une fois dans le studio, apr\u00e8s avoir install\u00e9 le logiciel d&#8217;enregistrement et la sensibilit\u00e9 du microphone, Mariana a interview\u00e9 Andy pendant environ une heure, tout en enregistrant la conversation. Le but de la session d&#8217;enregistrement \u00e9tait de traiter de tous les aspects cl\u00e9s de la recherche d&#8217;Andy, lui laissant suffisamment de temps pour partager ses connaissances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Le prochain d\u00e9fi consistait \u00e0 faire un montage de l\u2019entrevue pour obtenir un produit final qui correspondait aux segments et \u00e0 la dur\u00e9e de l&#8217;\u00e9mission. Mariana a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 produire un extrait de 12 minutes qui s&#8217;int\u00e8gre bien dans le segment musical et qui soit divertissant \u00e0 la radio. Alain a ajout\u00e9 la dur\u00e9e de l&#8217;entrevue \u00e0 la feuille de calcul de l&#8217;\u00e9mission, et a planifi\u00e9 la dur\u00e9e du reste des segments en cons\u00e9quence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dans la liste de lecture ci-dessus, vous pouvez \u00e9couter l&#8217;entrevue d&#8217;Andy sur le choix des 40 meilleurs disques de programmation et leur transcription tels qu&#8217;ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 diffus\u00e9s le 16 mars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>EN ARRI\u00c8RE SC\u00c8NE: LE D\u00c9BUT DE LA R\u00c9PONSE A LA COVID<\/h2>\n<div class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">La troisi\u00e8me \u00e9mission de notre s\u00e9rie a eu lieu le 16 mars. \u00c0 ce moment-l\u00e0, certaines lignes directrices en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 la crise de la Covid 19 \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 en place. L&#8217;\u00e9quipe du \u00ab Centenaire \u00bb a chang\u00e9 le lieu de sa r\u00e9union pr\u00e9paratoire habituelle d&#8217;un caf\u00e9 voisin au studio de CKUT. Des pr\u00e9cautions visant \u00e0 \u00e9viter l&#8217;exposition au virus avaient commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 circuler parmi les usagers des transports en commun, ce qui a conduit Alain \u00e0 d\u00e9cider d&#8217;\u00e9viter le trajet en m\u00e9tro ce jour-l\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">M\u00eame le studio \u00e9tait diff\u00e9rent ce jour-l\u00e0, car le lavage des mains \u00e9tait d\u00e9sormais obligatoire avant d&#8217;entrer, et tous les microphones \u00e9taient recouverts de lingettes Lysol. N\u00e9anmoins, l\u2019enregistrement de l\u2019\u00e9mission a pu continuer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Heureusement, au cours du processus de planification, Alain avait produit une feuille de temps d\u00e9taill\u00e9e sp\u00e9cifiant la longueur de tous les contenus et segments de l&#8217;\u00e9mission. Commen\u00e7ant par un extrait de \u00ab La guerre des mondes \u00bb, l&#8217;\u00e9mission pr\u00e9sentait les recherches d&#8217;Alain sur le d\u00e9veloppement de contenu de divertissement pour la radio, sa reproduction du populaire radioroman \u00ab Rue Principale \u00bb, une entrevue avec Andy Stuhl sur le r\u00f4le de la radio dans l\u2019\u00e9tablissement des 40 meilleurs classements musicaux, un extrait d&#8217;une finale de la Coupe Stanley de la LNH, le tout parsem\u00e9 d&#8217;une s\u00e9lection de chansons organis\u00e9e en lien avec le contenu des propos tenus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Il est important de noter que lors de la reconstitution du radioroman \u00abRue Principale\u00bb, Alain est seul pour lire le sc\u00e9nario. Mais qu&#8217;en est-il du personnage f\u00e9minin qu\u2019on y entend? Eh bien, c&#8217;est Alain qui utilise une fonction sp\u00e9ciale pour accentuer les fr\u00e9quences plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es de sa voix alors qu&#8217;il lisait les lignes qu&#8217;une femme aurait originalement lues. Il a \u00e9galement ajout\u00e9 des effets sonores pr\u00e9enregistr\u00e9s et disponibles en ligne. Ces effets sonores auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 ins\u00e9r\u00e9s en direct par un bruiteur dans le studio pendant que les com\u00e9diens lisaient leurs r\u00e9pliques, ce que nous savons d&#8217;apr\u00e8s les rares images qui nous montrent l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re du studio de radio lors des premi\u00e8res \u00e9missions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Une caract\u00e9ristique int\u00e9ressante de cette \u00e9mission se pr\u00e9sente sous la forme de difficult\u00e9s techniques en direct. Cette partie de l&#8217;\u00e9mission n&#8217;\u00e9tait d\u00e9finitivement pas pr\u00e9vue. Nous sentant plus confiants d&#8217;\u00eatre dans le studio et de faire fonctionner l&#8217;\u00e9quipement, nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de nous passer d&#8217;un technicien de CKUT pour nous soutenir pendant la diffusion. Mais lorsque Mariana a essay\u00e9 de lire le premier segment de contenu pr\u00e9enregistr\u00e9, aucun signal ne passait dans la console, ce qui a r\u00e9duit l\u2019\u00e9mission au silence. Que faire du silence \u00e0 la radio?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">La radio est la transmission d&#8217;ondes sans fil, mais il n&#8217;y a pas de son \u00e0 la radio quand aucune onde sonore n&#8217;est transmise. Vous avez besoin d&#8217;un son pour la radio, alors nous nous sommes d\u00e9p\u00each\u00e9s pour encha\u00eener avec quelques discussions d\u00e9contract\u00e9es, l\u00e9g\u00e8rement maladroites, pour contrer quelque peu la crise, jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 ce qu&#8217;un technicien se pr\u00e9cipite dans le studio et localise sous la console deux c\u00e2bles qui \u00e9taient d\u00e9connect\u00e9s. Il les a rapidement rebranch\u00e9s et, comme par magie, tout a recommenc\u00e9 \u00e0 fonctionner comme il se doit.
