He also offers an introduction to the beginnings of radio in Canada and the great success that the new medium had in the first decades since its inception. MOEB director Anja Borck, and Centennial Program Coordinator Mariana Mej\u00eda Ahrens, join Alain in the studio to kick start this celebration of radio history, live on the CKUT style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/radio100.moeb.ca\/en\/radio100ckut-2\/\">Second broadcast&nbsp; &gt; &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>THE CENTENNIAL AT CKUT: HOW THE RESIDENCY BECAME A REALITY<\/h2>\n<div class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">When the museum announced its participation in celebrating the centennial of radio broadcasting, Mariam Saleymeh, a McGill student and MOEB volunteer, asked if the museum would be interested in a month-long residency at the CKUT station. The radio station approved the idea. The team at the museum excitedly agreed to the residency, not quite grasping the real magnitude of the project. We have many radios and related objects all over the museum, but we had never \u2018made\u2019 radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the end of 2019 we agreed to produce 4 live shows of one hour each that would broadcast during the month of March, a date that was fast approaching. Luckily, Alain Dufour, President of the Quebec Society of Vintage Radio Collectors and Mariana Mejia Ahrens, sound engineer and centennial Project Coordinator, took over the project. Anja Borck, the director of the museum, completed the production team as the official voice of the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The first task in the early production stages of the residency was defining the main themes that each show would explore. The four themes selected by Alain and Mariana included the historic background of radio development, women in radio, radio entertainment content, and Canadian radio pioneers. The next task was writing the script and timetable for each show. The content of the shows heavily relied on the extensive research that Alain had done over the past two years in preparation for the centennial of radio broadcasting in Montreal. Naturally, Alain led the weekly script writing process, aided by Mariana, who offered feedback, comments and helped choose the music and sonic samples that would complete each broadcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The basic structure for the shows was decided during the completion of the first script: the three production team members would be live in the studio, Anja would lead the main conversation with Alain through the different segments, while Mariana would oversee the timing of the show and playback of the prepared sound samples. This structure saw us through our first broadcast successfully, encouraging us to follow the same format for the rest of the shows. Little did we know that content variants and external circumstances would prevent us from repeating the same structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For the second show, which broadcasted a day after the International Women&#8217;s Day, we saw it fitting to include a round table discussion with women active in the radio world. The most logical choice was to invite Mariam and her fellow CKUT colleagues. The basic show structure was therefore modified to include a list of possible questions that would let Anja lead the discussion, but without knowing exactly what we or our guests would say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For show number three, Mariana had the idea of including an interview with an expert that could give us deeper insight into the field of radio entertainment. She recorded and produced an interview with Andy Stuhl, Ph.D. student in Communication Studies at McGill University, who\u2019s main advisor happens to be professor Jonathan Stern, an old time friend of the museum. The structure challenge this time was blending the pre-recorded interview with the rest of the scripted in conversation that occured live the studio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The last show would have been just like the first show, a live production with Alain, Mariana and Anja. However, the Covid-19 pandemic response escalated quickly and the station closed right after our third broadcast. We had the choice to cancel, to postpone or to pre-record our last hour. So far, each show had offered a new challenge. Keeping with that concept, we decided to take on the challenge of pre-recording the entire last show. To accomplish this, each team member recorded their spoken collaboration from home following Alain\u2019s script, which had been written with this challenge in mind. Having a clear script was quite helpful since we each recorded without having the other person&#8217;s recordings. Mariana then edited the hour-long show, following the script to piece together the different discussion segments with the music and other sound samples of the discussion. There was some uncertainty to be conquered during the production process of our last show, but we were pretty happy with the final result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While we know that our broadcasts were far from perfect, we greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to write and produce our own radio shows. Plus the experience of being live on air was thrilling and nerve wracking at the same time. This residency allowed us to experiment and break the ice, since creating content for this medium was new to the whole team. It also led us to realize what makes radio special beyond being a common staple of daily life and reaffirm the importance of having access to community radio stations like CKUT. We are happy that we agreed to do this project. Our sincere appreciation to the CKUT team, and to Mariam for her initiative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>BEHIND THE SCENES: PREPARING FOR THE TEAM\u2019S FIRST LIVE RADIO SHOW<\/h2>\n<div class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">The first step in preparation for the residency was to meet at CKUT a week before the first show. We were introduced to the studio, learned about how to work with the microphones, saw the equipment and received instructions on how often to announce the radio station and how many ads would be included in the show. All seemed straightforward. A technician would be there to work the board and turn the mics on and off. We were also asked to fill out a log for all the music played after each show so that the station could pay royalties. Overall, the place was great, not too neat, not too organized but warm and friendly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What was not quite clear was how to create a program. How to make sure we would not run out of content in an hour, but also not running past our allotted show time. Talking on live radio is scary and being well prepared seemed the way to go. Alain created a spreadsheet with a military style time schedule by the second. You can find some scans of the schedule with our last minute additions as PDF on this page. He added the text for each person leaving some room for free talk, and timed the music, sound samples and all the other details in the same sheet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then, there was the challenge of language. Alain is French Canadian, while Mariana and Anja are immigrants from Mexico and Germany respectively, both more comfortable in English than in French. To not add additional stress, we decided to have the show in both French and English depending on our language preferences. Thanks to the prepared text, we knew what was said because with all the nerves on edge, listening or speaking in any second language can become a minefield for embarrassment much more so than a conversation in your mother tongue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When the first show was over, we were all happy yet super tired. In older times, the experience would have ended here, since the radio show would have become ephemeral content, only available during the show. But today, each show is recorded and archived online, so we were able to listen back to our first ever attempt at making a radio show from scratch. Overall, we found that our first show on live radio was not too bad. However, doing professional radio is an art that needs to be mastered. style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/radio100.moeb.ca\/radio100ckut-2\/\">Deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9mission&nbsp; &gt; &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>LE CENTENAIRE A CKUT: COMMENT LA R\u00c9SIDENCE DEVIENT UNE R\u00c9ALIT\u00c9<\/h2>\n<div class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Lorsque le mus\u00e9e a annonc\u00e9 sa participation \u00e0 la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration du centenaire de la radiodiffusion, Mariam Saleymeh, \u00e9tudiante \u00e0 McGill et b\u00e9n\u00e9vole au MOEB, a demand\u00e9 si le mus\u00e9e serait int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par une participation d&#8217;un mois \u00e0 la station CKUT. La station de radio a approuv\u00e9 l&#8217;id\u00e9e. L&#8217;\u00e9quipe du mus\u00e9e a accept\u00e9 avec enthousiasme la r\u00e9sidence, ne saisissant pas vraiment l&#8217;ampleur r\u00e9elle du projet. Nous avons de nombreuses radios et objets connexes dans le mus\u00e9e, mais nous n\u2019avons jamais \u00abfait\u00bb de la radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fin 2019, nous avons convenu de produire quatre \u00e9missions live d&#8217;une heure chacune qui seraient diffus\u00e9es au cours du mois de mars, une date qui approchait rapidement. Heureusement, Alain Dufour, pr\u00e9sident de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des collectionneurs de radio anciens du Qu\u00e9bec et Mariana Mejia Ahrens, ing\u00e9nieur du son et coordonnatrice du projet du centenaire, ont repris le projet. Anja Borck, la directrice du mus\u00e9e, a compl\u00e9t\u00e9 l&#8217;\u00e9quipe de production en tant que voix officielle du mus\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">La premi\u00e8re t\u00e2che des premiers stades de production de cette programmation a \u00e9t\u00e9 de d\u00e9finir les principaux th\u00e8mes que chaque \u00e9mission allait explorer. Les quatre th\u00e8mes choisis par Alain et Mariana comprenaient le contexte historique du d\u00e9veloppement de la radio, les femmes \u00e0 la radio, le contenu de divertissement radiophonique et les pionniers de la radio canadienne. La t\u00e2che suivante consistait \u00e0 r\u00e9diger le sc\u00e9nario et le d\u00e9roulement de chaque \u00e9mission. Le contenu des \u00e9missions s&#8217;appuyait fortement sur les recherches approfondies qu&#8217;Alain avait effectu\u00e9es au cours des deux derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es en pr\u00e9paration du centenaire de la radiodiffusion \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Naturellement, Alain a dirig\u00e9 le processus d&#8217;\u00e9criture du sc\u00e9nario hebdomadaire, aid\u00e9 par Mariana, qui a fourni des commentaires et a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 choisir la musique et les \u00e9chantillons sonores qui compl\u00e9teraient chaque \u00e9mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">La structure de base des \u00e9missions a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cid\u00e9e lors de la r\u00e9daction du premier script : les trois membres de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe de production seraient en direct dans le studio, Anja animerait la conversation principale avec Alain dans chacun des diff\u00e9rents segments, tandis que Mariana superviserait le d\u00e9roulement de l\u2019\u00e9mission et la lecture des extraits sonores pr\u00e9par\u00e9s. Cette structure nous a permis de r\u00e9ussir notre premi\u00e8re diffusion, nous encourageant \u00e0 suivre le m\u00eame format pour le reste des \u00e9missions. Nous ne savions pas que les variantes de contenu et les circonstances externes nous emp\u00eacheraient de reprendre la m\u00eame structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Pour la deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9mission, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 diffus\u00e9e un jour apr\u00e8s la Journ\u00e9e internationale des femmes, nous avons jug\u00e9 opportun d&#8217;inclure une table ronde avec des femmes actives dans le monde de la radio. Le choix le plus logique \u00e9tait d&#8217;inviter Mariam et ses coll\u00e8gues de CKUT. La structure de base de cette \u00e9mission a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9e pour inclure une liste de questions qui permettraient \u00e0 Anja de diriger la discussion, mais sans savoir exactement ce que nous ou nos invit\u00e9s diraient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Pour l&#8217;\u00e9mission num\u00e9ro trois, Mariana a eu l&#8217;id\u00e9e d&#8217;inclure une interview avec un expert qui pourrait nous donner un aper\u00e7u plus approfondi du domaine du divertissement radio. Elle a enregistr\u00e9 et produit une interview avec Andy Stuhl, \u00e9tudiant de doctorat en communication \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill, dont le principal conseiller est le professeur Jonathan Stern, un ami de longue date du Mus\u00e9e. Le d\u00e9fi de la structure cette fois \u00e9tait de m\u00e9langer l&#8217;interview pr\u00e9enregistr\u00e9e avec le reste de la conversation sc\u00e9naris\u00e9e qui a eu lieu en direct dans le studio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Le dernier spectacle aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 semblable au premier spectacle, une production live avec Alain, Mariana et Anja. Cependant, la r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 la pand\u00e9mie de Covid-19 s&#8217;est rapidement intensifi\u00e9e et la station a ferm\u00e9 ses portes juste apr\u00e8s notre troisi\u00e8me \u00e9mission. Nous pouvions annuler, reporter ou pr\u00e9enregistrer la derni\u00e8re heure. Jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, chacune des \u00e9missions avait offert un nouveau d\u00e9fi. Fid\u00e8le \u00e0 ce concept, nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de relever le d\u00e9fi de pr\u00e9enregistrer l&#8217;int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 du dernier spectacle. Pour ce faire, chaque membre de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe a enregistr\u00e9 sa participation orale depuis son domicile en suivant le sc\u00e9nario d&#8217;Alain, qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crit en tenant compte de ce d\u00e9fi. Avoir un script clair a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s utile car chacun a enregistr\u00e9 sans avoir les enregistrements de l&#8217;autre personne. Mariana a ensuite \u00e9dit\u00e9 l&#8217;\u00e9mission d&#8217;une heure, en suivant le script pour reconstituer les diff\u00e9rents segments de discussion avec la musique et d&#8217;autres extraits sonores de la discussion. Il y avait une certaine incertitude \u00e0 surmonter lors du processus de production de notre dernier spectacle, mais nous \u00e9tions assez satisfaits du r\u00e9sultat final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bien que nous sachions que nos \u00e9missions \u00e9taient loin d&#8217;\u00eatre parfaites, nous avons beaucoup appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 avoir la possibilit\u00e9 d&#8217;\u00e9crire et de produire nos propres programmes de radio. De plus, l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience de faire du direct \u00e9tait passionnante et angoissante en m\u00eame temps. Cette r\u00e9sidence nous a permis d&#8217;exp\u00e9rimenter et de briser la glace, car la cr\u00e9ation de contenu pour ce m\u00e9dia \u00e9tait nouvelle pour toute l&#8217;\u00e9quipe. Cela nous a \u00e9galement permis de r\u00e9aliser ce qui rend la radio sp\u00e9ciale au-del\u00e0 d&#8217;\u00eatre un outil de base de la vie quotidienne et de r\u00e9affirmer l&#8217;importance d&#8217;avoir acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des stations de radio communautaires comme CKUT. Nous sommes heureux d&#8217;avoir accept\u00e9 de r\u00e9aliser ce projet. Nos sinc\u00e8res remerciements \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9quipe de CKUT et \u00e0 Mariam pour son initiative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>ENVERS DU D\u00c9COR: PR\u00c9PARER LA PREMI\u00c8RE \u00c9MISSION DE RADIO DE L&#8217;\u00c9QUIPE EN DIRECT<\/h2>\n<div class=\"resume\">\n<p class=\"p1\">La premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape de la pr\u00e9paration de la r\u00e9sidence a \u00e9t\u00e9 de se rencontrer au studio de CKUT une semaine avant la premi\u00e8re \u00e9mission.. On nous a montr\u00e9 le studio, nous avons appris \u00e0 travailler avec les microphones, vu l&#8217;\u00e9quipement et re\u00e7u des instructions sur la mani\u00e8re d&#8217;annoncer la station de radio et le nombre d&#8217;annonces \u00e0 inclure dans l&#8217;\u00e9mission. Tout semblait simple. Un technicien serait l\u00e0 pour utiliser la console, allumer et \u00e9teindre les micros. On nous a \u00e9galement demand\u00e9 de remplir un journal pour toute la musique jou\u00e9e apr\u00e8s chaque \u00e9mission afin que la station puisse payer les redevances. Dans l&#8217;ensemble, l&#8217;endroit \u00e9tait super, pas trop soign\u00e9, pas trop organis\u00e9 mais chaleureux et convivial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ce qui n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas tout \u00e0 fait clair, c&#8217;\u00e9tait comment cr\u00e9er un programme. Comment s&#8217;assurer que nous ne manquerions pas de contenu en une heure, mais aussi que nous ne d\u00e9passerions pas le temps allou\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9mission. Parler \u00e0 la radio en direct fait peur et \u00eatre bien pr\u00e9par\u00e9 semblait la voie \u00e0 suivre. Alain a cr\u00e9\u00e9 une feuille de calcul avec un calendrier de style militaire \u00e0 la seconde pr\u00e8s. Alain a ajout\u00e9 le texte pour chacun, laissant de la place pour la conversation improvis\u00e9e et a chronom\u00e9tr\u00e9 la musique, les \u00e9chantillons sonores et tous les autres d\u00e9tails dans la m\u00eame feuille.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ensuite, il y a eu le d\u00e9fi de la langue. Alain est canadien-fran\u00e7ais, tandis que Mariana et Anja sont des immigrants du Mexique et d&#8217;Allemagne respectivement, plus \u00e0 l&#8217;aise en anglais qu&#8217;en fran\u00e7ais. Pour ne pas ajouter de stress suppl\u00e9mentaire, nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d&#8217;avoir le spectacle en fran\u00e7ais et en anglais selon nos pr\u00e9f\u00e9rences linguistiques. Gr\u00e2ce au texte pr\u00e9par\u00e9, nous avons su ce qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 dit car avec tous les nerfs \u00e0 vif, \u00e9couter ou parler dans une deuxi\u00e8me langue peut devenir un champ min\u00e9 d&#8217;embarras comparativement \u00e0 une conversation dans sa langue maternelle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00c0 la fin de la premi\u00e8re \u00e9mission, nous \u00e9tions tous heureux mais super fatigu\u00e9s. Anciennement, l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience se serait termin\u00e9e ici, car le programme de radio serait devenue quelque chose d\u2019\u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re, uniquement disponible pendant la diffusion.. Mais aujourd&#8217;hui, chaque \u00e9mission est enregistr\u00e9e et archiv\u00e9e en ligne, nous avons donc pu r\u00e9\u00e9couter notre premi\u00e8re tentative de faire une \u00e9mission de radio \u00e0 partir de rien. Dans l&#8217;ensemble, nous avons constat\u00e9 que notre premi\u00e8re \u00e9mission \u00e0 la radio en direct n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas trop mauvaise. Cependant, faire de la radio professionnelle est un art qui doit \u00eatre ma\u00eetris\u00e9.
