Whether you know Montreal or you do not \u2013 walking along a heritage trail<\/strong><\/a> is a great way to discover a city and see familiar places with new eyes.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

I am the director of the Mus\u00e9e des ondes Emile Berliner<\/a><\/strong>, and I was curious to explore with our heritage trail Montreal\u2019s radio past on the actual sites.\u00a0 I took some photos of all the mentioned locations in Circuit 1<\/strong><\/a> and wanted to share them.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

You can get an idea of the experience and, if you cannot make the trip to Montreal, you can still participate online.\u00a0 I had a great time and I learned a lot thanks to Alain Dufour\u2019s great research.<\/p>\n

The images were taken on May 7th 2020.\u00a0 The tour took me 2 hours and 15 minutes, including some longer stops and a short detour. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"Do\n\t\tDo not forget your sunglasses, mask and some water.\n\t\t\t\t\"02C3Shadow\"\n\t

I decided to drive to the first location by car due to the coronavirus crisis.\u00a0 However, parking can be difficult even during the lockdown of the city.\u00a0 At the end of the tour, I walked from location J to location A down on Peel Street which took me 10 minutes.\u00a0 I was walking fast.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Visitors who would like to use public transportation could take the Metro to Bonaventure Station, the closest metro stop to the beginning of the circuit. I had a paper printout of the circuit guide with me, which I like because the text is large enough that I did not need my reading glasses.\u00a0 I will walk Circuit 2 using my smartphone and share my feedback on that option.<\/p>\n

When you go, be advised that Montreal is in major construction mode.\u00a0 Take a map with you or your smartphone should you need to take a detour.\u00a0 The PDF map provided online<\/a> <\/strong>is a good tool for general orientation, but not sufficient for people unfamiliar with the city.\u00a0 During my tour on a Thursday, social distancing was always possible, even in the popular Old Montreal and Downtown.\u00a0 The walk is easy, with some short down-hills and up-hills.\u00a0 The circuit works well on a bike or with a stroller as long as you do not plan to visit the inside of buildings, where you will often find stairs.<\/p>\n

Marconi’s factory<\/a><\/strong> was small in comparison to its neighbours, the Dow Brewery and the chocolate factory of Lowney.<\/p>\n

The city sets up signs for pedestrians to find their way around the roadblocks.<\/p>\n

McGill Street has many of these very large buildings. Each left an impact on the city, such as the Shaughnessy Building<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

West of McGill Street are factories and old warehouses, east of McGill Street is the old center of Montreal, prepared for tourists and visitors.<\/p>\n

With only 7 stories, the Freeman Hotel<\/a><\/strong> fit the height of the buildings of its time. Scale can help in dating buildings.<\/p>\n

The street is narrow with houses tightly packed on both sides, offering plenty of shade in Montreal\u2019s hot summers. The heavy renaissance style of the LeDevoir Building radiates prestige and exclusivity. Click here<\/a><\/strong> to zoom in on the Marconi plaque next to the entrance of the building.<\/p>\n

The old La Presse building<\/strong><\/a> is a favorite for many architecture fans with the skillful play of red-stone and yellow brick. The antennas, once on the roof, are long gone. The new La Presse building<\/a><\/strong> from the late 1950s is the next property around the corner down the street.<\/p>\n

A block of concrete with only doors in wood housed the Canada Cement Company<\/strong><\/a>. The story goes that the company refused to pay fire insurance because there was nothing that could burn. The CFCF radio station on the 10th floor had a great view.<\/p>\n

The Sunlife Building and the roman catholic Mary Queen of the World Cathedral<\/strong><\/a> share the same quarry for their stone. It is worthwhile to step into the palace like office complex at 1155 Metcalfe Street.<\/p>\n

Circuit 1: Location I<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The building with a slim fa\u00e7ade on Sainte Catherine Street is easily overlooked. CKAC moved into the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) Building right after the building was completed in 1929. In 1962, CIBC builds one of Montreal\u2019s highest skyscrapers<\/a><\/strong> with a very tall antenna on top to become the city\u2019s tallest structure.<\/p>\n

Today, one of Montreal\u2019s shopping temples took over the old Mount Royal Hotel<\/a><\/strong>. We recommend a visit inside. It gives a good idea of the beauty the hotel once displayed.<\/p>\n

J’ai bien appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 mon exp\u00e9rience et j’ai beaucoup appris gr\u00e2ce aux recherches exhaustives d’Alain Dufour.<\/p>\n<p>Les images ont \u00e9t\u00e9 prises le 7 mai 2020. Cependant, le stationnement peut \u00eatre difficile malgr\u00e9 le confinement de la ville. \u00c0 la fin de la visite, j’ai march\u00e9 de l’emplacement J \u00e0 l’emplacement A sur la rue Peel, ce qui m’a pris 10 minutes. Je marchais vite. Les visiteurs qui souhaitent utiliser les transports en commun peuvent prendre le m\u00e9tro jusqu’\u00e0 la station Bonaventure, station la plus proche du d\u00e9but du circuit. J’avais avec moi une copie papier du guide du circuit, ce que j’ai appr\u00e9ci\u00e9, puisque que le texte est imprim\u00e9 en assez gros caract\u00e8res pour que je n’aie pas besoin de mes lunettes pour lire. Je vais parcourir le Circuit 2 en utilisant mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone intelligent pour partager mes commentaires sur ce circuit des pionniers de la radio de Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque vous ferez ce parcours, sachez qu\u2019il y a beaucoup de travaux actuellement \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Emportez une carte de la ville avec vous, ou votre t\u00e9l\u00e9phone intelligent pour vous y retrouver si vous devez faire un d\u00e9tour. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/radio100.moeb.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Circuit1_map.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La carte PDF fournie en ligne<\/a> <\/strong>est un bon outil d’orientation g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, mais insuffisante pour les personnes peu famili\u00e8res avec la ville. Durant ma visite, un jeudi, la distanciation sociale a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 possible, m\u00eame dans le populaire quartier du Vieux-Montr\u00e9al ainsi qu\u2019au centre-ville. La promenade est facile, avec quelques courtes descentes et mont\u00e9es. La station de radio CKAC a emm\u00e9nag\u00e9 dans l\u2019\u00e9difice de la Banque Canadienne Imp\u00e9riale de Commerce juste apr\u00e8s que le b\u00e2timent ait \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9 en 1929.
